Anonymous Manuscript: Item no. 16

Cotton Mills at Lanark.

In the course of 6 years Mr Dale of this place has raised (?)
a village on the banks of the Clyde, containing 2,000 persons &
has erected 5 (sic)Cotton mills - each of which contains 6,000 spindles.
The various provisions which he has made for the health of
the children employed by him is highly praiseworthy -
they have every day some hours allotted for exercise in the
fields; & their looks bespeak of health and vigour - Their hours
of relaxation are enjoyed in succession. Their apartments
are likewise clean & well aired, & 10 schoolmasters are
employed in their tuition.

(Wording very similar to notice in “Annual Register” for 1792 (?).

See Podmore pp 70-1.)
